Campy 60s superheroes rule at the Retro Cocktail Hour's next Cinema a Go Go at Liberty Hall - Friday, January 27 at 7:00pm. Our big double feature begins with Superargo Vs. Diabolikus, an Italian-Spanish co-production from 1966 in which the indestructible, red-suited Superargo battles a madman who's plotting to steal the world's uranium. |
The Superargo movies (well, there were only two) are sort of a cross between 007 and Batman, with definite influence from the very popular Mexican lucha libre films of the 1960s, epecially the El Santo movies. |

Our second big feature is Japan's Golden Bat. The Golden Bat is considered Japan's first superhero, a character who began in the Kamashibai storytelling tradition in 1930 and was later adapted for comic books, TV and movies. The Golden Bat is a survivor of ancient Atlantis, who rises from his tomb to fight the forces of evil with his super strength and his magic scepter, which hurls lightning bolts and causes earthquakes!

For this 1966 feature, the Earth is threatened by some evil outer space types who are out to steal the Super Destruction Beam Cannon! Legendary action star Sonny Chiba leads a secret U.N. team against the baddies, with help from The Golden Bat. |
